Entwurfsgrad

Entwurfsgrad is a German term used in architecture, engineering, and product development to describe the degree of completeness and detail in a design at a given point in the development process. It reflects how far the planning and specification have progressed, including the adequacy of geometry, dimensions, materials, and performance requirements. A higher Entwurfsgrad corresponds to more detailed and authoritative design information, enabling downstream processes such as permitting, fabrication, and construction.

In practice, projects pass through several stages with associated Entwurfsgraden. Common distinctions include a preliminary design (Vorentwurf), a design or draft design phase (Entwurf), and execution design (Ausführungsplanung). The Entwurfsgrad influences contractual and procurement decisions, cost estimation, and scheduling. For example, at the Entwurf stage, plans typically include floor layouts, elevations, sections, and key building systems at a resolution sufficient for review and approvals, but may lack the fully shop-drawn details, tolerances, and fabrication information required for construction. At the Ausführungsgrad, detailed drawings, assembly specifications, and manufacturing information are provided.

Regulatory and professional frameworks such as the German HOAI (Honorarordnung für Architekturleistungen) tie the Entwurfsgrad to defined Leistungsphasen (service phases) and fee structures. While the term is most common in German-language contexts, the concept corresponds broadly to design maturity in other countries, described as levels of design maturity, schematic design, or detailed design.
