Engeström

Yrjö Engeström is a Finnish scholar known for his contributions to the field of education and social sciences, particularly through the development and application of activity theory. He has held academic positions at the University of Helsinki and has led research initiatives such as the Center for Research on Activity, Development and Learning (CRADLE).

Engeström is best known for expanding activity theory into its third generation, which foregrounds collective learning, collaboration across organizational boundaries, and the transformation of work practices. Central concepts include expansive learning, whereby groups engage in a cycle of questioning current practices, modeling new ones, examining and implementing them, and embedding new practices in daily work. The theory emphasizes multi-voicedness, the role of mediating tools, the object of activity, and the social and organizational structure surrounding an activity system. Contradictions within and between activities are seen as drivers of development and change, not merely obstacles.

Engeström’s work has influenced research and practice in education, organizational development, health care, and professional development.
