Emissointispektrinä is a term derived from Finnish that literally translates to "emission spectrum." In scientific contexts, it refers to the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a substance as it transitions from a higher energy state to a lower energy state. This emission occurs when atoms or molecules absorb energy, exciting their electrons to higher energy levels. As these excited electrons return to their ground state, they release the excess energy in the form of photons. The wavelength of these emitted photons is characteristic of the specific substance, making emission spectra useful for identifying elements and molecules.

The process of generating an emission spectrum typically involves exciting a sample, for instance, by heating it, passing an electric current through it, or exposing it to light. When the excited particles return to their lower energy states, they emit light at discrete wavelengths. This pattern of bright lines against a dark background is unique to each element. For example, the emission spectrum of hydrogen has a distinct set of lines, as does that of helium or sodium. Analyzing these spectral lines allows scientists to determine the elemental composition of stars, nebulae, and other celestial objects, as well as to diagnose the composition of materials in laboratories.
