Emajõgi

Emajõgi is a river in Estonia that connects two of the country’s large lakes. It flows from Lake Võrtsjärv in the south, north through the central region and the city of Tartu, and empties into Lake Peipsi. The name means "Mother River" in Estonian. The river is about 100 kilometers long and is part of the Baltic Sea drainage basin.

Source and course: The Emajõgi begins as the outflow of Võrtsjärv and travels northward to Peipsi. The river passes through varied landscapes, including rural farmlands, forests, and urban areas, with a floodplain that supports wetlands and meadows along much of its length. In the lower reaches, the river forms extensive floodplains that are protected as the Emajõe-Suursoo nature reserve, a key site for biodiversity.
