Emäshajotus

Emäshajotus refers to the decomposition of a substance when exposed to alkaline conditions. This process involves the breakage of chemical bonds due to the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Halogenated compounds can undergo dehydrohalogenation in the presence of a strong base, removing a hydrogen atom and a halogen atom to form an alkene.

It can also be employed in chemical synthesis to cleave specific bonds or to remove protecting groups.
