Elohopeamittaria refers to thermometers that use mercury as their thermometric substance. Mercury is a liquid metal that expands and contracts predictably with temperature changes, making it suitable for measuring temperature. These thermometers typically consist of a glass tube filled with mercury, with a calibrated scale etched on the side. As the temperature rises, the mercury expands and rises up the tube, indicating the temperature on the scale. Conversely, as the temperature falls, the mercury contracts and moves down the tube.

Historically, mercury thermometers were widely used in scientific, medical, and domestic settings due to their accuracy and wide temperature range. They were a common sight in laboratories for experiments, in hospitals for taking patient temperatures, and in homes for monitoring room temperature. The smooth and consistent expansion of mercury allowed for precise readings.

However, concerns regarding the toxicity of mercury have led to a decline in the use of mercury thermometers. Mercury is a neurotoxin that can be harmful to human health and the environment, particularly if the thermometer breaks.
