Elementzahlen

Elementzahlen is a German term that does not designate a single fixed concept in all disciplines. Depending on context, it can refer to the count of elements in a collection or, in everyday language, to the numbers associated with elements in chemistry. In chemistry the standard term for the number of protons in an atom is the atomic number, and the usual German term is Ordnungszahl; “Elementzahl” or “Elementzahl” is sometimes encountered informally but is not the precise technical term.

In mathematics and set theory, elementzahlen can be used to denote the cardinality of a set, written as |S|. For finite sets, this is a nonnegative integer; for infinite sets, it can be a larger cardinal number (such as aleph-null). The term is not common in formal texts, where cardinalität, Mächtigkeit or Card is the standard terminology.

In data analysis or combinatorics, elementzahlen may refer to frequency counts of elements within a collection. For example, in a multiset with elements a, b, b, c, the counts are a→1, b→2, c→1, and the total elementzahl is 4.
