Elektronisuihkulähteitä, known in English as electron beam sources, are devices that generate a focused beam of electrons. These sources are fundamental components in various scientific and industrial applications, including electron microscopy, particle accelerators, and welding.

The principle of operation for most electron beam sources involves thermionic emission, where a heated filament, typically made of tungsten, releases electrons. These electrons are then accelerated and focused by electrostatic or magnetic fields. In some advanced applications, field emission sources are used, which generate electrons without requiring high temperatures, relying instead on a strong electric field to pull electrons from a sharp tip.

The energy and current of the electron beam can be precisely controlled, allowing for high-resolution imaging in electron microscopes and efficient material processing in industrial settings. The vacuum environment is crucial for electron beam sources to prevent scattering of electrons by air molecules, ensuring the beam remains focused and its energy is preserved.

Electron beam sources are categorized by their intended use. For instance, scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) utilize low to medium energy electron beams for surface imaging, while transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) employ higher energy beams to penetrate thin samples. Particle accelerators use powerful electron beams for fundamental physics research and medical applications like radiation therapy. Industrial electron beam welding offers a precise and deep welding capability for metals.
