Elektronbombardement, also known as electron bombardment or electron impact, refers to a process where a beam of electrons is directed at a target material. This interaction can lead to various phenomena depending on the energy of the electrons and the nature of the target.

In some applications, electron bombardment is used for excitation and ionization. When high-energy electrons collide with atoms or molecules, they can transfer energy, causing electrons within the target to jump to higher energy levels (excitation) or even be ejected entirely (ionization). This is a fundamental process in fields like mass spectrometry, where it's used to fragment molecules and identify their components.

Electron bombardment can also induce chemical reactions. The energy deposited by the electrons can break chemical bonds, initiate polymerization, or modify the surface properties of materials. This technique finds use in areas such as surface treatment, sterilization, and the synthesis of specialized polymers.

Furthermore, electron bombardment is a key principle in many technologies. Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) in older televisions and monitors utilize electron beams scanned across a phosphor screen to create images. Electron beam welding uses a focused beam of electrons to melt and fuse materials with high precision. Electron microscopy employs electron beams to image samples at very high resolutions, far exceeding the capabilities of light microscopes. The energy of the incident electrons is crucial in determining the outcome of the bombardment, ranging from gentle excitation to significant material modification.
