Elektrokimik

Elektrokimik is a field of chemistry that studies the relationship between electricity and chemical change. It encompasses chemical reactions that produce or consume electricity, and the chemical effects of electric currents. The core principles of elektrokimik revolve around the transfer of electrons between chemical species, a process known as redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction.

At the heart of elektrokimik are electrochemical cells, devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy or vice versa. There are two main types of electrochemical cells. Galvanic cells, also known as voltaic cells, generate electricity from spontaneous redox reactions. Batteries are a common example of galvanic cells, used to power portable electronic devices. Electrolytic cells, on the other hand, use electrical energy to drive non-spontaneous redox reactions. Electrolysis, a process employing electrolytic cells, is used in applications like electroplating metals and refining materials.

Key concepts in elektrokimik include electrode potentials, which measure the tendency of a species to gain or lose electrons, and the Nernst equation, which relates these potentials to concentrations and temperature. Faradaic laws quantify the amount of chemical change produced by the passage of electric current. Elektrokimik has wide-ranging applications, from energy storage (batteries, fuel cells) and energy conversion to corrosion prevention, chemical synthesis, and biosensing. Understanding elektrokimik is crucial for developing new technologies in these diverse fields.
