Elektrodekinetiek refers to the study of the electrokinetic phenomena that occur at the interface between a solid surface and a liquid. These phenomena are a result of the presence of electrical charges on the solid surface and the formation of an electrical double layer in the adjacent liquid. Key electrokinetic effects include electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation potential.

Electrophoresis is the movement of charged particles suspended in a liquid under the influence of an applied electric field. This principle is widely used in analytical techniques like gel electrophoresis for separating molecules such as DNA and proteins. Electroosmosis, conversely, describes the bulk flow of a liquid through a porous medium or capillary tube when an electric field is applied across it. This effect is utilized in applications like microfluidic devices and capillary electrophoresis.

Streaming potential arises when a liquid flows through a stationary charged surface, generating an electrical potential difference. Conversely, sedimentation potential is observed when charged particles settle in a liquid, creating a potential difference due to their movement.
