Electronilähteitä refers to sources of electrons used in various scientific and technological applications. These sources are fundamental components in devices such as electron microscopes, particle accelerators, and X-ray tubes. The primary function of an electron source is to generate a beam of electrons, which can then be manipulated for specific purposes.

There are several types of electron sources, each with its own operating principle and advantages. Thermionic emission is a common method, where a material, typically a filament, is heated to a high temperature, causing electrons to be ejected from its surface. Tungsten filaments and LaB6 (lanthanum hexaboride) crystals are frequently used in this type of source. Another method is field emission, which relies on a strong electric field to pull electrons from a sharp tip. This method can produce very high current densities. Photoemission, where electrons are released from a material upon illumination with photons (light), is also employed, particularly in specialized applications.

The choice of electron source depends on the requirements of the application, such as the desired electron energy, current density, and stability. Electron sources are critical for imaging at the nanoscale, studying material properties, and in medical imaging technologies. Their development continues to be an area of active research, aiming for improved brightness, coherence, and longevity.
