Einwegschlüsseln

Einwegschlüssel, also known as disposable keys or single-use keys, are cryptographic keys intended to be used only once for a specific transaction or session. The primary purpose of using an Einwegschlüssel is to enhance security by limiting the exposure of a key. If a key is compromised, the damage is contained to that single instance, as it cannot be reused for future communications.

This concept is widely applied in various security protocols. For example, in the generation of secure communication sessions, such as those established by TLS (Transport Layer Security), ephemeral keys are often used. These ephemeral keys are generated for each session and discarded afterward. This ensures that even if an attacker intercepts a session and manages to extract the session key, they cannot use it to decrypt past or future sessions.

The implementation of Einwegschlüsseln can vary. They might be generated using asymmetric cryptography, where a temporary public/private key pair is created for a single operation. Alternatively, they can be derived from a shared secret that is itself ephemeral. The key characteristic remains their limited lifespan and singular purpose.

The use of Einwegschlüsseln contributes to forward secrecy, a critical security property. Forward secrecy guarantees that the compromise of a long-term secret key does not compromise the confidentiality of past communication sessions. By employing Einwegschlüsseln, systems can achieve a higher level of security against sophisticated adversaries who might attempt to collect encrypted data over time and decrypt it later if a key is eventually compromised.
