Einteilchen

Einteilchen is a nonstandard German term that appears occasionally in physics writings. It is not part of the formal nomenclature in modern German science. In standard usage, the concepts likely intended by Einteilchen are either a single particle or an elementary particle, but the exact meaning is usually inferred from context. The preferred terms are Einzelteilchen for “single particle” and Elementarteilchen for “elementary particle.”

Usage and interpretation: In introductory quantum mechanics, one studies the state of a single particle described by a wavefunction, often in a given potential. In many-particle systems the description becomes more complex and requires different formal tools. If a text uses Einteilchen, readers should check whether the author means a single-particle description (Einzelteilchen) or a fundamental particle (Elementarteilchen).
