Eignarhluts is the term used to describe an ownership stake in a company, typically expressed as a percentage of its share capital. An eignarhlut represents a claim on a portion of the company’s assets and profits and may carry governance rights depending on the share class. In practice, holders are known as hluthafar (shareholders). The rights associated with an eignarhlut usually include voting at general meetings, proportional dividends, and a claim on distributions in a winding-up, subject to the terms of the share class and company bylaws.
