Ehkäisylaastarin

Ehkäisylaastari, also known as the contraceptive patch, is a thin, beige plastic patch that is worn on the skin. It is a method of hormonal contraception that releases estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy. The patch is typically applied once a week for three weeks, followed by a week of patch-free time, during which a withdrawal bleed occurs.

The patch works by releasing hormones through the skin into the bloodstream. These hormones prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to block sperm, and thin the uterine lining to make implantation less likely. When used correctly, it is highly effective at preventing pregnancy.

To use the patch, a person applies a new patch to clean, dry, and hairless skin on the buttocks, abdomen, upper outer arm, or upper torso. Each patch is worn for seven days. After three weeks of continuous use, the patch is removed, and a period of seven days without a patch follows. A new patch is then applied on the first day of the next cycle.

Potential side effects are similar to other hormonal contraceptives and can include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and mood changes. Some individuals may experience skin irritation at the application site.
