Egészségbiztosítók, often translated as health insurers, are organizations that provide financial protection against the costs of healthcare services. In Hungary, the system of health insurance is largely based on a social insurance model, meaning that contributions are mandatory for most citizens and are used to fund a publicly provided healthcare system. However, private health insurance also exists, offering supplementary benefits and access to private healthcare providers.

The primary entity responsible for administering mandatory health insurance in Hungary is the National Health Insurance Fund Manager (Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő - NEAK). NEAK collects contributions from employers, employees, and self-employed individuals, and it finances the services provided by public hospitals, clinics, and physicians. These services typically cover a wide range of medical treatments, hospital stays, prescription drugs, and preventive care.

Private health insurance in Hungary operates alongside the public system. These policies are purchased voluntarily by individuals or provided as benefits by employers. They can cover services not fully reimbursed by NEAK, offer faster access to specialists, or provide access to a wider network of private healthcare facilities. The premiums for private health insurance vary depending on the coverage level, the age of the insured, and the chosen provider. Companies offering private health insurance include both domestic and international providers, catering to a diverse range of needs and budgets.
