Egzistencija is a term used primarily in South Slavic languages, particularly Slovene and Croatian, equivalent to the English word existence. The word derives from the Latin exsistere, meaning “to stand out” or “to arise,” and entered the modern languages in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of a broader movement to adopt more precise philosophical vocabulary. In contemporary usage, egzistencija refers to the state or condition of being, encompassing both physical presence and the subjective experience of being aware.

In philosophical contexts, egzistencija is often discussed in relation to metaphysics, ontology, and existentialism.
