Egenföretag

Egenföretag is a Swedish term that translates to "self-employment" or "sole proprietorship" in English. It refers to an individual who operates a business as their own boss, without being an employee of another entity. This business structure is common in Sweden and encompasses a wide range of professions and activities, from freelance consultants and artists to small shop owners and tradespeople.

When an individual chooses to become an egenföretag, they are responsible for all aspects of their business. This includes managing finances, marketing, client acquisition, and often, administrative tasks. Egenföretag are typically registered with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and are subject to its regulations regarding income tax, VAT (moms), and social security contributions. They can operate as a sole trader (enskild firma) or sometimes as a limited company (aktiebolag) where they are the sole owner and employee. The legal and financial responsibilities lie entirely with the individual. This form of entrepreneurship offers flexibility and the potential for direct reward but also carries the inherent risks associated with running a business.
