Eelpiltne
Eelpiltne is a rare, bioluminescent fungus found in the deep temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Its common name derives from its peculiar appearance, resembling a glowing, tangled mass of elvers, or young eels. The fungus typically grows on decaying hardwood logs, particularly those of alder and maple. It emits a soft, greenish light, which is most visible in complete darkness. This luminescence is thought to be a byproduct of a metabolic process, though its exact function for the fungus remains a subject of scientific inquiry.
The fruiting bodies of eelpiltne are delicate and ephemeral, often appearing after periods of heavy rainfall.
