Ecthelion

Ecthelion is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium, appearing in his posthumously published work The Silmarillion. He is an Elf of high lineage, a Noldor prince. Ecthelion is primarily known for his role in the Wars of Beleriand, a series of conflicts fought by the Elves against the Dark Lord Morgoth. He was the lord of the hidden fortress of Gondolin, one of the last Elven strongholds.

During the Siege of Gondolin, Ecthelion was a key defender of the city. His most notable feat occurred during the fall of Gondolin to Morgoth's forces. He is depicted as fighting valiantly against Balrogs, powerful demonic creatures serving Morgoth. In a climactic battle within the city, Ecthelion famously fought and slew Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs, a creature of immense power. This act, however, cost Ecthelion his life. He drowned in the Fountain Court of Gondolin, a testament to the ferocity of his battle. His death was a significant loss for the Elves and marked a turning point in the destruction of Gondolin. Ecthelion is remembered as one of the greatest Elven warriors of the First Age.
