EUkomission

EUkomission is a term used to refer to the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union. It is responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding the EU treaties, and managing the day-to-day affairs of the Union. The Commission acts as the guardian of EU law, oversees policy execution, and administers the EU budget.

The Commission is composed of a College of Commissioners, led by a President, with one Commissioner from each member state. As of the current configuration, the College includes 27 Commissioners. Each Commissioner is assigned a specific portfolio, such as competition, trade, environment, or health, and heads a Directorate-General and associated services that draft policy, implement programs, and supervise enforcement of EU rules.

Key functions include proposing legally binding EU legislation, implementing and managing EU policies, negotiating international agreements, and representing the EU in external affairs. The Commission monitors and enforces compliance with EU law, initiating infringement procedures when member states fail to fulfill obligations. It administers the EU budget and manages programs that fund development, research, regional policy, and other initiatives.

The Commission operates independently in its role of serving the EU interests, even though Commissioners are nominated by member states and must be approved by the European Parliament. It is subject to oversight by the European Parliament, which can approve or dismiss the College, and its actions are interpreted and adjudicated within the framework of EU treaties and the Court of Justice. The Commission works in close cooperation with the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to shape and implement EU policy.
