EUStaatsbürgerschaft

EUStaatsbürgerschaft, or EU citizenship, is a concept established by the Maastricht Treaty in 1993. It is a supplementary citizenship that complements national citizenship of a Member State of the European Union. Any person who holds the nationality of an EU Member State is automatically an EU citizen.

EU citizenship grants several rights to its holders. These include the right to move and reside freely within the territory of the Member States, subject to certain conditions. EU citizens also have the right to vote and stand as a candidate in elections to the European Parliament and in municipal elections in their Member State of residence, under the same conditions as nationals of that State. Furthermore, they have the right to diplomatic and consular protection from the authorities of any EU Member State in the territory of a third country where their own Member State does not have representation.

Other rights associated with EU citizenship include the right to petition the European Parliament and the right to apply to the European Ombudsman. The principle of non-discrimination on grounds of nationality is a fundamental aspect of EU citizenship. While EU citizenship does not replace national citizenship, it adds a layer of rights and opportunities for individuals within the European Union framework.
