EMGtutkimus

EMGtutkimus, a Finnish term, refers to electromyography (EMG) examination. Electromyography is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them. These nerve cells are called motor neurons. Motor neurons transmit electrical signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, causing them to contract. EMG can detect abnormalities in nerve or muscle function.

The procedure typically involves two main parts: electroneurography (ENG) and needle EMG. ENG measures the electrical activity of nerves, usually by placing small electrodes on the skin over the nerve. Brief electrical impulses are then delivered to stimulate the nerve, and the speed and strength of the signal are recorded. Needle EMG involves inserting a fine needle electrode directly into a muscle. This electrode records the electrical activity of the muscle at rest and during voluntary contraction.

EMGtutkimus is used to diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting muscles and nerves. These can include carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage), herniated discs, muscle diseases (myopathies), and nerve root compression. The results of an EMGtutkimus help physicians determine if a problem exists, its severity, and its location, aiding in the development of an appropriate treatment plan. The examination is generally safe, though some discomfort may be experienced during the needle insertion.
