EBSoptimized

EBSoptimized refers to an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance type that is specifically configured to provide optimized throughput and low latency for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes. These instances are designed for workloads that are I/O intensive and require consistent performance from their attached storage.

The primary benefit of an EBS-optimized instance is the dedicated network bandwidth between the EC2 instance and EBS. This dedicated connection prevents I/O traffic from the EBS volumes from competing with other instance network traffic, such as traffic to the internet or other AWS services. This isolation leads to improved and more predictable performance for storage-bound applications.

EBS-optimized instances come in various families, including compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and general-purpose types. The specific level of EBS I/O performance, measured in IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) and throughput (MB/s), varies depending on the instance type and size chosen. Customers can select an EBS-optimized instance that best matches the performance requirements of their application and the storage needs of their EBS volumes.

When using EBS-optimized instances, it is recommended to provision EBS volumes with appropriate performance characteristics, such as provisioned IOPS SSD (io1/io2) or general-purpose SSD (gp2/gp3) volumes, to fully leverage the capabilities of the instance. This combination ensures that the entire storage stack, from the instance to the volume, is tuned for optimal I/O performance.
