Duminica

Duminică, sometimes spelled Duminica (Romanian for Sunday), is the seventh day of the week in the Gregorian calendar and the day named for the Lord in Christian liturgy. In Romanian, the term is used for the day on which many people attend church services or observe a day of rest, particularly within Orthodox and Catholic communities.

The name originates from Latin dies Dominicus, "the Lord's day," through the development of the Romanian language. The form duminică reflects phonetic evolution from ecclesiastical Latin via vernacular Romanian.

In religious contexts, Sunday is the primary day of worship in Western Christian traditions and in Eastern Orthodoxy, where liturgical services are held, and feasts or seasonal celebrations may be observed.

For many Romanians, Sunday is also a weekly day off from work or school, used for family activities, meals, and leisure; in urban areas opening hours may vary, but religious observance remains a common aspect of the day.

In Moldova, Romania, and other Romanian-speaking communities, Sunday is widely recognized as the day of rest and worship, though secular practices have grown with modern life. The term appears in phrases naming specific Sundays in the liturgical year, such as Duminica Floriilor (Palm Sunday) and Duminica Rusaliilor (Pentecost Sunday), reflecting its role in the liturgical calendar.
