Dubbelkoppeling

Dubbelkoppeling, often translated as double clutch, refers to a type of transmission that uses two separate clutches to manage gear changes. This technology is primarily found in modern automatic and semi-automatic transmissions, offering a blend of automatic convenience and manual transmission performance.

The core concept involves two input shafts, one for odd-numbered gears and another for even-numbered gears. Each shaft is connected to its own clutch. While one clutch is engaged and powering the vehicle through a specific gear, the transmission pre-selects the next gear on the other shaft. When a gear change is required, the first clutch disengages simultaneously as the second clutch engages. This rapid, seamless transfer of power between clutches results in extremely fast and smooth gear shifts.

This rapid shifting is a key advantage of dubbelkoppeling systems, as it minimizes power interruption during acceleration. It also contributes to improved fuel efficiency compared to traditional torque converter automatic transmissions, as there is less energy loss. However, these transmissions can sometimes be more complex and potentially more expensive to manufacture and repair than conventional gearboxes. They are widely used in performance cars and increasingly in mainstream vehicles.
