Dropletmikrofluidiikka, also known as droplet microfluidics, is a subfield of microfluidics that focuses on the generation, manipulation, and analysis of discrete, picoliter-sized droplets within microchannels. These droplets act as independent microreactors, enabling high-throughput experiments and precise control over chemical and biological processes.

The fundamental principle involves encapsulating small volumes of liquid within an immiscible carrier fluid, typically oil, using specialized microfluidic devices. Droplets can be generated in various formats, such as single-file streams or arrays, and their size and frequency can be precisely controlled by adjusting flow rates and device geometry.

Key applications of droplet microfluidics span diverse fields. In biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, it is used for high-throughput screening of drug candidates, directed evolution of enzymes, and single-cell analysis. The ability to encapsulate individual cells or molecules allows for the study of their behavior in isolated microenvironments. Diagnostics also benefit from droplet microfluidics, enabling rapid and sensitive detection of biomarkers, DNA amplification, and point-of-care testing.
