This involves selecting materials with suitable permeability, ensuring proper thickness and slope, matching the drainage layer to soil type and load, and protecting finer soils with filter layers. Durability, chemical compatibility, and resistance to freeze-thaw cycles are also important.

Applications span foundations and basements, retaining walls, roads and railways, green roofs, and agricultural fields. Drainage materials may be installed as under-drains, drainage blankets, or surface media to manage water at different depths. Standards and specifications vary by country and project, but the general goal is to provide reliable, long-term water removal with minimal maintenance.
