The franchise originated in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, and over the years used several nicknames before settling on Dodgers, a reference to Brooklyn residents who dodged streetcars. The team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season and has played its home games at Dodger Stadium since 1962; prior to the move, they played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
