Djarum

Djarum is an Indonesian tobacco company and brand known for producing kretek cigarettes. Based in Kudus, Central Java, it is one of the country’s oldest and best-known kretek producers. The company began in 1951 as a small, family-run kretek operation and grew into a major national enterprise. It is privately held by the Hartono family, who also own Bank Central Asia (BCA), making Djarum part of one of Indonesia’s largest business groups.

Djarum produces a range of kretek and clove cigarettes marketed under several variants, including well-known lines such as Djarum Black and Djarum Super, among others. The brand is distributed domestically and exported to various international markets.

In addition to its tobacco business, Djarum is known for its involvement in sport and culture through the Djarum Foundation, which has supported arts programs and the sport of badminton in Indonesia. The Djarum Badminton Club has been a prominent source of Indonesian players and international success, reflecting the company’s public presence beyond tobacco manufacturing.

The company operates within Indonesia’s regulatory framework for tobacco products, including advertising and age-restriction rules, and has faced the same health and regulatory pressures as other cigarette producers.
