Ditiup

Ditiup is a passive verb form in Indonesian language derived from the root tiup, which means to blow. The form is created with the passive prefix di- and indicates that the subject of a sentence is being blown upon by an external agent.

In use, the thing that experiences the blowing is the subject of the sentence, while the blunter agent can be omitted or specified with the preposition oleh to indicate who or what causes the action. For example, "Kertas itu ditiup oleh angin" means the paper is blown by the wind, and "Lilin itu ditiup oleh adik" means the candle is blown out by a sibling. The agent can be unknown or implied, which is common in Indonesian when the actor is obvious from context.

Tense in Indonesian is not marked on the verb form, so ditiup does not itself express time. Time is inferred from adverbs or surrounding context; for past actions, one might add kata kerja seperti telah or sudah, as in "Kertas itu telah ditiup oleh angin." The construction is also used in describing states resulting from the action, such as a candle being extinguished or papers being scattered by wind.
