Distachyos

Distachyos is a genus of extinct flowering plants belonging to the extinct family Distachyaceae. Fossil evidence suggests these plants existed during the Late Cretaceous period. The most notable feature of Distachyos is its inflorescence, which is characterized by two distinct spike-like structures, hence the genus name which combines "dis" (two) and "stachys" (spike).

The reproductive organs of Distachyos were likely borne on these spikes. Fossil specimens, primarily found in sedimentary rock formations, preserve impressions of the plant's foliage and inflorescences. Analysis of these fossils indicates that Distachyos possessed leaves with a venation pattern typical of angiosperms.

The exact ecological role and evolutionary relationships of Distachyos are still subjects of ongoing research. Its discovery contributes to our understanding of plant diversity during the Cretaceous, a period of significant evolutionary innovation for flowering plants.
