Dissidia

Dissidia is a video game series from Square Enix that brings together fighters and elements from the Final Fantasy franchise in crossover battles. The series is set within a shared mythos in which two opposing forces, Cosmos and Chaos, battle for balance across multiple worlds. The concept emphasizes large-scale clashes between characters who previously appeared in separate Final Fantasy titles.

The first game, Dissidia Final Fantasy, released in arcades in 2008 and later for the PlayStation Portable, introduced the core mechanics, including a Bravery and HP system and a two-faction battle structure. Players earn Bravery points to raise an HP-based attack potential, linking combat outcomes to the narrative conflict between Cosmos and Chaos. The PSP version expanded the roster and modes, establishing the franchise’s crossover premise.

A sequel, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, released for the PSP (and later in arcades) in 2011, added new characters and refinements to balance and presentation. It continued the Cosmos–Chaos storyline and broadened gameplay options and story content, offering a deeper exploration of the series’ mythos and mechanics.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT debuted in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and was later released for PC. This entry shifts toward a 3-on-3 team-based fighting format with updated mechanics that emphasize teamwork, stage interaction, and assisted actions, while maintaining the recurring theme of Cosmos versus Chaos and a rotating roster drawn from various Final Fantasy titles.

The Dissidia brand also includes a mobile role-playing game, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, released for iOS and Android in 2017, which preserves recurring characters and themes within a gacha-based RPG framework.

Overall, the series is noted for its ambitious crossover concept, distinctive battle systems, and the challenge of balancing a large roster of characters from across Final Fantasy.
