Discourse pragmatics is an interdisciplinary field that investigates how meaning in extended stretches of language is shaped by pragmatic inference, discourse structure, and social context. It sits at the crossroads of pragmatics—the study of how context contributes to meaning—and discourse analysis, which examines how larger units of talk are organized and interpreted. Researchers examine how speakers convey intentions, manage topics, and negotiate shared understanding in conversation, narration, and other discourses. Consider how the sentence "It's cold in here" may function as a request to close a window depending on the surrounding discourse and social situation.

Key concepts include implicature and presupposition, deixis, illocutionary force, and speech acts, as well as discourse markers, cohesion, and coherence relations that knit sentences into a structured whole. Discourse pragmatics emphasizes how stance, politeness, and affiliation are conveyed and how inferencing depends on prior turns, shared knowledge, and genre conventions.

Methodologically, it uses qualitative and quantitative approaches from discourse analysis, conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, and experimental pragmatics; cross-cultural and multilingual investigations highlight how social norms affect interpretation. It may study genre-specific patterns (academic discourse, political speech) and conversational dynamics (turn-taking, repair).

Applications include media analysis, education, intercultural communication, and natural language processing, where understanding discourse-level meaning improves sentiment analysis, dialogue systems, and user interaction design. The field faces challenges in defining boundaries between pragmatics and semantics in extended discourse and in handling variation across cultures and modalities.
