Dipóluskölcsönhatások, also known as dipole-dipole interactions, are a type of intermolecular force that occurs between polar molecules. A polar molecule has a permanent electric dipole moment, meaning it has a slight positive charge at one end and a slight negative charge at the other. These attractions arise from the electrostatic interaction between the positive end of one molecule and the negative end of another. The strength of these interactions depends on the magnitude of the dipole moments of the molecules involved and their proximity. Dipole-dipole forces are weaker than ionic bonds or covalent bonds but are stronger than London dispersion forces, another type of van der Waals force. These interactions play a significant role in determining the physical properties of substances, such as boiling points and melting points. For example, substances with strong dipole-dipole interactions tend to have higher boiling points because more energy is required to overcome these attractions and separate the molecules into the gaseous phase. Examples of molecules that exhibit significant dipole-dipole interactions include hydrogen chloride (HCl), ammonia (NH3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The presence of these forces influences solubility, with polar substances generally dissolving well in polar solvents due to favorable dipole-dipole interactions.
