Dipslipförkastningar, a geological term originating from Swedish, describes a specific type of fault in rock formations. The name itself translates to "dip slip fault." These faults are characterized by the movement of rock masses primarily along the dip of the fault plane. In simpler terms, one block of rock slides up or down relative to the other block along an inclined surface. This contrasts with strike-slip faults where movement is horizontal.

The movement along a dip-slip fault can be classified into two main categories: normal faults and reverse faults. In a normal fault, the hanging wall moves down relative to the footwall. This typically occurs in areas where the Earth's crust is being stretched or extended, leading to a decrease in elevation of the hanging wall. Conversely, in a reverse fault, the hanging wall moves up relative to the footwall. Reverse faults are commonly associated with compressional forces, where the crust is being squeezed or shortened, causing uplift of the hanging wall. Thrust faults are a special type of reverse fault with a very shallow dip angle.
