Dimethylaminoethyl

Dimethylaminoethyl refers to a chemical substituent composed of a tertiary amine, N(CH3)2, connected via a two-carbon linker to the rest of a molecule: (CH3)2N-CH2-CH2-. It is often described as the N,N-dimethylaminoethyl group or as a 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl substituent in some contexts. The group is a basic, polar moiety and, when part of a larger molecule, can enhance water solubility and allow protonation under physiological conditions. The conjugate acid of this amine typically has a pKa around 9–10, so the group is largely protonated at physiological pH.

In synthesis, the dimethylaminoethyl group is introduced by reactions that attach an N,N-dimethylaminoethyl fragment to a substrate, for example via alkylation of amine partners with halogenated ethyl derivatives such as 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride or related reagents.
