Dikromaattilisäys
Dikromaattilisäys refers to the process of incorporating dichromate salts into materials, often for industrial or historical applications. Dichromate ions, characterized by the formula Cr2O7^2-, are strong oxidizing agents. Historically, potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) was widely used due to its availability and oxidizing properties. Its use was prevalent in areas such as photography, particularly in the carbon printing process, where it acted as a sensitizer for gelatin. In the textile industry, dichromates were employed as mordants, helping dyes adhere to fabrics. They also found application in tanning leather, contributing to its preservation and durability. However, the use of dichromates has significantly declined in many modern applications due to environmental and health concerns. Chromium(VI) compounds, including dichromates, are known carcinogens and are toxic to aquatic life. Consequently, regulatory restrictions have been implemented in many countries, leading to a search for less hazardous alternatives. The legacy of dichromate usage can still be found in older photographic prints and historical textiles.
