Dihydrosphingosines

Dihydrosphingosines are a class of sphingolipids that are structurally related to sphingosine. They are synthesized in vivo through the reduction of the double bond in the trans-4-sphingenine moiety of ceramide. This reduction is catalyzed by the enzyme dihydroceramide reductase. Dihydrosphingosines are important intermediates in the biosynthesis of other sphingolipids, including sphingomyelin and glycosphingolipids. They are also found in various biological tissues and fluids, and their levels can be altered in certain physiological and pathological conditions.

The metabolism of dihydrosphingosines is closely linked to that of other sphingolipids.
