Differential diagnosis is a systematic method used by healthcare professionals to identify a patient's condition from a limited set of possibilities. It involves a process of elimination, where a clinician considers all potential causes for a patient's signs and symptoms and then rules them out based on further questioning, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. The goal is to arrive at the most probable diagnosis, allowing for the most appropriate treatment plan.

The process typically begins with gathering a thorough patient history, including details about the onset, duration, severity, and characteristics of symptoms. This is followed by a comprehensive physical examination to identify objective signs. Based on this initial information, a list of potential diagnoses, known as a differential diagnosis list, is generated. Each item on this list represents a plausible explanation for the patient's presentation.

Further investigation, such as laboratory tests, imaging studies, or specialized procedures, is then employed to confirm or exclude the diagnoses on the list. The results of these investigations help narrow down the possibilities. As more information becomes available, the likelihood of certain conditions increases or decreases, guiding the clinician towards the final diagnosis. This iterative process ensures that all reasonable explanations are considered, minimizing the risk of misdiagnosis and ensuring effective patient care.
