Diagenettisestä is a term used in geology to describe the physical, chemical, and biological changes that occur to a sediment after it is deposited, during and after lithification, but before metamorphism. These processes are crucial in transforming loose sediment into solid rock. Diagenesis encompasses a wide range of transformations that can affect the porosity, permeability, and mineralogy of sedimentary rocks.

Key diagenetic processes include compaction, which is the reduction in pore space due to the weight of overlying sediments. Cementation is another important process where minerals precipitate from pore fluids, binding sediment grains together. Dissolution can occur where minerals are dissolved by pore fluids, leading to an increase in porosity. Recrystallization involves the change in crystal size or form of minerals without changing their chemical composition. Authigenesis refers to the formation of new minerals within the sediment or rock after deposition. Biological activity, such as bioturbation by organisms, can also significantly alter the sediment structure and composition during diagenesis.
