Devizában

Devizában is a Hungarian expression for indicating that something is expressed, settled, or held in a foreign currency, i.e., in a currency other than the domestic one. In Hungary the term deviza refers to foreign currency or foreign-exchange assets, such as euros, US dollars, or pounds, whether in cash, deposits, or bank instruments.

Common uses include pricing, invoicing, and contracts that are stated in a foreign currency, as well as transactions conducted abroad. Banks offer devizaszámlák, i.e., accounts denominated in foreign currencies. In accounting and finance, transactions in devizában are typically translated into the base currency (for example, the forint) using the exchange rate on the transaction date, with any resulting devizaárfolyam-különbözet recognized in the financial results.

Regulatory and institutional context in Hungary involves oversight by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) and the broader legal framework governing foreign exchange operations, currency exchanges, and cross-border payments. Banks provide services for holding deviza, exchanging currencies, and facilitating international payments, all subject to prevailing exchange rates and applicable rules.

The use of devizában carries currency risk, since exchange rate fluctuations affect the value of assets, liabilities, and cash flows. Companies and individuals may employ hedging techniques, such as forward contracts, to manage this risk when dealing with foreign-currency transactions.
