Detoneeruvad

Detoneeruvad is an Estonian verb form meaning “they detune” or “they become detuned.” It is the present tense, third-person plural form of the verb detoneeruma, which refers to altering a pitch away from a reference tuning. The term is used in music, audio engineering, and everyday speech to describe sounds or performances whose pitch does not align with a reference standard.

Detuning can be intentional or accidental. In music, detoneeruvad may describe a deliberate artistic effect—such as producing a chorus-like or tense-dissonant texture—or a consequence of instrument mis-tuning, temperature or humidity changes, or sample-rate issues in digital audio. In practice, any element that is pitched out of tune—whether a single note, a vocal line, or an entire ensemble—can be described as detoneeruvad.

An example: Need helid detoneeruvad, kui instrument on valesti häälestatud. (These tones detune when the instrument is tuned inaccurately.) The form detoneeruvad belongs to standard Estonian verb conjugation and is the plural subject form; other persons and tenses use related forms of the same verb.
