The most basic rule is the power rule, which states that the derivative of x^n is nx^(n-1), where n is any real number. The sum and difference rules allow us to find the derivative of a sum or difference of functions by differentiating each function separately and then adding or subtracting the results.

More complex rules include the product rule and the quotient rule, used for differentiating products and quotients of functions, respectively. The product rule states that the derivative of u(x)v(x) is u'(x)v(x) + u(x)v'(x). The quotient rule states that the derivative of u(x)/v(x) is (u'(x)v(x) - u(x)v'(x)) / [v(x)]^2.

Perhaps the most powerful rule is the chain rule, used for differentiating composite functions (functions within functions). It states that the derivative of f(g(x)) is f'(g(x)) * g'(x).
