Derivaattituotteet, known in English as derivative products, are financial instruments whose value is derived from an underlying asset or group of assets. This underlying asset can be a stock, bond, commodity, currency, interest rate, or market index. The primary purpose of derivative products is to manage risk, speculate on future price movements, or gain exposure to markets without directly owning the underlying assets.

The most common types of derivative products include futures, options, forwards, and swaps. Futures contracts obligate the buyer to purchase an asset or the seller to sell an asset at a predetermined future date and price. Options, on the other hand, give the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specified price within a certain timeframe. Forward contracts are similar to futures but are typically traded over-the-counter (OTC) and are customizable. Swaps involve the exchange of financial instruments or cash flows between two parties, often used to manage interest rate or currency risk.

Derivatives can be complex financial tools and are used by a wide range of participants, including corporations, financial institutions, and individual investors. While they offer significant benefits in terms of risk management and market access, they also carry substantial risks, including the potential for significant financial loss if market movements are unfavorable. The trading of derivatives is often subject to regulatory oversight to ensure market integrity and protect investors.
