Derivaatiosanat, also known as derived words, are words formed from a base word by the addition of affixes. In many languages, including Finnish, derivational morphology plays a crucial role in expanding vocabulary and creating new words with related meanings. These affixes, which can be prefixes or suffixes, attach to a root or stem to modify its grammatical category or semantic meaning.

For instance, in Finnish, the suffix -minen can be added to verbs to form nouns denoting an action or process. The verb "lukea" (to read) can become "lukeminen" (reading). Similarly, the suffix -llinen can transform a noun into an adjective, as in "ilo" (joy) becoming "iloinen" (joyful). Prefixes can also be used, though they are less common in Finnish derivational morphology compared to suffixes.
