Depsides
Depsides are a class of naturally occurring organic compounds, specifically a type of phenolic compound. They are formed through the esterification of two or more phenolic units, usually ortho-substituted hydroxyl groups. This ester linkage connects the individual phenolic units, forming a larger molecule. The simplest depsides are dimers of simpler phenolic acids, such as salicylic acid or orsellinic acid. However, more complex depsides can involve three or more phenolic units and can exhibit a wide range of structures.
These compounds are predominantly found in lichens, where they are produced by fungal symbionts. They play
