Denaturedthat is a coined term used in speculative linguistics and media studies to describe a rhetorical or conceptual device in which a proposition is altered or rendered less stable by the insertion of a denaturing that-clause. In this sense, a statement is said to be denaturedthat when its evidential or truth-conditional weight is visibly undermined by the meta-claim embedded within the that-clause.

Originating in online forums and fan wikis around the early 2020s, denaturedthat combines the idea of denaturation—rendering something unusable or inert—with the grammatical complementizer that. The term is not part of established grammar or semantics but serves as a conceptual shorthand for examining how language can shift audience trust.

Mechanistically, denaturedthat involves three features: (1) the introduction of a meta-claim inside a that-clause, (2) a signaling of tentative or dubious evidential status, and (3) a detachment of the main proposition from the speaker’s primary authority. An illustrative example is: The report is denaturedthat that the results were conclusive. While awkward, such constructions are used in analysis to show how accompanying meta-notes inside a sentence can alter perceived certainty.

Usage and reception vary.
