Delfshaven

Delfshaven is a historic district located in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It is situated along the Schie canal, a waterway that historically connected Delft with the Maas River. The area retains much of its 17th-century character, featuring old warehouses, charming canal houses, and the Oude Kerk (Old Church).

Historically, Delfshaven served as the port of Delft, a crucial link for trade and transportation. It was a vital center for the Dutch East India Company and played a significant role during the Dutch Golden Age. The district is also known for its association with the Pilgrim Fathers. It is believed that the Pilgrims departed from Delfshaven in 1620 on their journey to America aboard the Speedwell, before eventually sailing on the Mayflower from Plymouth, England.

During World War II, Delfshaven was one of the few areas in Rotterdam to largely escape the devastating bombing of May 1940. This preservation has allowed it to maintain its historical architecture and atmosphere. Today, Delfshaven is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved buildings, picturesque canals, and maritime heritage. It is a place where history and modern life coexist, with cafes, restaurants, and small businesses operating within its historic setting.
